Collection of Trombiculid Mites Using Vacuum Cleaner and Tullgren Funnel Apparatus

Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate a method using vacuum cleaner and Tullgren funnel apparatus for collecting the larval trombiculid mites from the soil samples.
The samples were obtained from soil in and around the hole of the wild rodent for 2-5 times in a month from March, 1991 to February, 1992 in 12 localities of Kyung-Ki province and in one area on the outskirts of Chonju city.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. A total of 240 trombiculid larvae, 237 unfed and 3 engorged larvae belonging to 10 species of 3 genera, were collected from the soil samples.
Average number of the trombiculid larvae per one Tullgren funnel apparatus was 4.6.
2. The number of trombiculid larva per one Tullgren funnel apparatus in November, and then 6.8 in April, 3.2 in October, 3.0 in March in decreasing order.
3. Leptotrombidium (leptotrombidium) pallidum was the largest in number among 10 species but the dominant species were different depending on the collecting areas.
4. Unfed larvae composed of 97% in the soil samples, whereas engorged larvae composed of 89% in the wild rodent sam;es.
5. The sizes of the unfed larvae showed no marked difference among 5 species, but those of the engorged larvae were different significantly depending upon the species(P<0.05).
From these result, the method using vacuum cleaner and Tullgren funnel apparatus was considered to be very simple and useful method for collecting the larval trombiculid mites, especially the unfed larvae.
